Soul searching

The drone of the tanpura stirs something in me. It reminds me not to think discordant thoughts; it prompts me to sing in ‘sur’and it teaches me that the world can be experienced through music!
I haven’t posted anything here for more than a year, now. I do sit down, occasionally, but I lose myself to the music playing in the background – it’s a sin to use the ‘mute’ button on my laptop! So, what exactly have I listened to in the last year? Well, lots. Sometimes I listen to pieces repeatedly, each time being a different experience; at others I thirst for something new – music that showcases the passion of a ‘thinking’ artiste. The mind works with great vigour and the heart leaps with joy. Music, most certainly, offers a wholesome experience. It provides great pleasure just as it tickles the grey cells!
I just love this piece in Raga Gaud Sarang; in three minutes I am taken to a different world!
Raga Gaud Sarang, Pt. D.V. Paluskar – ‘Piyu pal na laagi mori akhiyan…’
Raga Gavati, Smt. Veena Sahastrabuddhe – ‘More nanda laal…’and ‘Angia na daro re gulaal…’
I haven’t heard this Raga at a live concert. Probably because of the time it has to be sung – late afternoon.
The semi classical styles of thumri, kajri, hori, dadra, chaiti, dhamar and bara masi ooze romanticism. These were styles that the layperson was able to connect to with great ease. Not every classical vocalist is able to do justice to these, though! It’s something about the voice, the temperament and the personality of the artiste…..
Smt. Girija Devi, kajri – ‘Bhiji jaun mein piya….’
The beautiful thing about Hindustani Classical music is that it leaves me thirsting for more, every time! I end this post with a very popular composition in the King of Ragas, Yaman.
‘Sakhi eri aali piya bina…’, Gana Saraswati Smt. Kishori Amonkar..
‘…ever since my beloved has left, I spend the nights counting the stars….’

It is nice to see you writing again!! Your posts are nice and make for interesting reading. This post is still in a staccato style and reflects your state of mind ~ filled with several thoughts and songs just waiting to be poured out and shared with all. Keep writing and you will come back to the calm and analytical posts that have characterised your earlier writings.
