Moony Musings

Statement: My zodiac sign is apparently ruled by the moon.
Conclusion: I’m moody, sensitive and romantic!

So I thought I’d take a walk along the meandering lanes of Bollywood with some moon-inspired songs for company.

'Chand Aahe Bharega', Mukesh

…the moon will sigh! Mukesh’s voice had that ‘emotional-pain’ factor - ‘dard’ as we would refer to it in Hindi. So, even his romantic songs had that flavour to it.

'Chalo dildaar chalo', Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi

The use of Raga Pahadi in the composition of this song adds to the ethereal feel of going across the moon. What an intoxicating feeling!

'Chaudavin ka chand', Mohammad Rafi

Another composition in Raga Pahadi, the lyrics are, ofcourse, very dramatic – are you the full-moon or the Sun, referring to the brightness of her face!

'Chand akela', Yesudas

Yesudas has sung some very beautiful classical raga based songs for Hindi films. This one is based in Raga Tilak Kamod[1]. Why does the moon go alone…

'Chand ko kya maloom', Mukesh

Does the moon know that it is loved by a ‘chakor’[2]? Personally, I don’t find anything exceptional about this song.

'Chand sifarish jo karta', Shaan

Shaan (Shantanu Mukherjee) was born into a family with creative pursuits; his grandfather was a lyricist and is father, Manas Mukherjee, was a music director and did have some training in classical music (the ‘Bengali’ thing!). If the moon could recommend… I guess we can’t get over the Indian concept of wanting a recommendation, even in love!

[1] Raga Tilak Kamod is of the Khamaj Thaat, and, therefore, demonstrates the flavour of Khamaj. But the characteristic notes of Tilak Kamod (pa ni sa re ga-sa, re pa ma ga sa-ni(mandra) ) seem present in this song.
[2] Chakor is a partridge, believed to be enamoured with the moon.
