Goan flavours in Bollywood Cuisine

As I sat on the park bench last evening I was approached by a young lady who sat next to me on the same bench. After a few minutes of silence she initiated a conversation : "Aunty..."
I was taken aback and then realised she wanted me to play 'agony aunt'!

When the evening replayed in my mind, I was reminded of the song 'Auntyji' from a recent Hindi film and that lead me into thinking of the Goan influences in Hindi film music...

Goa - the land of beaches, feni and vindaloo and Goa- the land that is the birthplace of some of the best musicians in the Hindustani classical music arena (Kesarbai Kerkar, Jitendra Abhisheki, Mogubai Kurdikar, Kishori Amonkar to name a few)!

But here I’d like to touch upon the flavour of western orchestra music and Portuguese music, from Goa, that left their mark on the music of Hindi films.

Anthony Vaz Xavier is credited with bringing in ‘swing’ into Hindi film music.

Eena Meena Deeka

Gore Gore Banke Chore

This was Pyarelal’s (of Laxmikant-Pyarelal fame) tribute to his violin teacher Anthony Prabhu Gonsalves

My name is Anthony Gonsalves

An adaptation of the popular Goan folk form ‘Dekhni’ that is an amalgamation of Goan dance and song:

Na maangu sona chandni

Speaking of Goa and not mentioning ‘Sagaar’ would be a gross mistake!

O Maria

Remo Fernandes occupies a place of prominence among musicians who contributed greatly to the ‘Goa’ influence into film music.

I’d like to close this short walk along the shores of Goa with this number:

Auntiji
