A Requiem for Love

She could tell from the way he held her hand
Her legs too weak from sadness, to stand;
He looked away as her eyes welled with tears,
Her heart beating in tandem with her fears!

They were too different, he said, quite simply
As her weight slumped into a chair so limply;
The love they shared, to him, was a mistake
Everything she did was for that very love’s sake.

He turned away not once looking at her
Her mind unable to think, being in a blur.
Her lovely lips never a word did speak,
The ache in her bosom making her meek!

She thought of the love that they had shared
Her body, mind and soul to him she bared.
Laughter and happiness that made her content,
From all the time together that they spent.

The way he moved the strand from her face
So a kiss on her forehead he could place.
Every time in his arms she would melt
When his warm embrace she felt!

“You are so beautiful”, he would let her know
“It is your love that makes me seem so!”
The moments of quiet surrender they felt
In eachother’s arms as they would lay spent.

He lost himself when a song she did sing
Abundance of peace her voice did bring.
But he would stay away weeks on end
Not a message for her he would send!

She understood now what to him she meant
And poured her heart out in a letter she sent.
Every memory of the love she listed for him
That to him she was just another whim!

The last song she sang that night,
Her lovely voice betraying her plight;
Words she sang between many a pause
A requiem for the love that never was!
